Got a question?
Is it easy to install blinds?
Is it easy to install blinds?
Installing blinds yourself is incredibly easy. You only need a measuring tape, a pencil and a drill. Shadey provides everything else including screws.
Installing a blind is much easier than putting together IKEA furniture. Roller blinds for example only use 2 screws on each bracket, plus on for a chain anchor.
Even if you’ve never used a drill before, this is a great project to get started on power tools with.
Which blinds are the most cost effective?
Which blinds are the most cost effective?
Roller blinds are the cheapest blinds, however that doesn’t mean they have to look cheap.
Made-to-measure roller blinds ensure that your blinds have a perfect fit, and they are also available in a wide range of colours and fabrics from smooth and simple to luxuriously textured.
What are the differences between cheap and expensive blinds?
A give away of cheap blinds is that they don’t fit the window properly.
Made-to-measure blinds are usually only fractionally more expensive than pre-cut blinds, however because they are made to fit perfectly to your windows they end up looking far more expensive.
While pre-made blinds might be a bit cheaper, made-to-measure blinds offer far greater value in the long run.
What is the most popular type of window blind?
What is the most popular type of window blind?
Roller blinds are the most popular type of blind by far.
They are the cheapest to buy, they are the most cost effective, they also have the most minimalistic design meaning the impact your home the least. They are also the easiest to install - they only require 2 screws on each side (plus another one to anchor your control chain).
What blinds can you see out of but not see in?
What blinds can you see out of but not see in?
Sheer sunscreen blinds are blinds that you can see out of, but people cannot see in during the day. They have a similar appearance to flywire.
Another window covering option that lets you maintain your view while offering daytime privacy is a sheer curtain.
Both options allow one way viewing into the area that is more brightly lit. During the day, this is usually outside. However with the lights on at night, this means people outside can see in. If nighttime privacy is important, it’s important to add a blackout blind.
Which blinds allow light in but are still private?
Which blinds allow light in but are still private?
Light filter blinds allow in light but still offer both daytime and nighttime privacy. At night it may be possible to see some soft shadows or vague silhouettes, however privacy is maintained.
Light filter blinds have an appearance similar to a frosted window, allowing light in while obstructing views and maintaining privacy.
You can choose light filter roller blinds, light filter roman blinds and light filter honeycomb blinds.
What is the current trend in window blinds?
What is the current trend in window blinds?
Honeycomb blinds are having a moment thanks to an increased focus on sustainability – as well as an ever increasing emphasis on keep electricity bills low!
Roman blinds are also making a comeback with next generation fabrics that make them easy to care for while adding texture to a room. Aluminium Venetians blinds are also back in vogue thanks to a reimagining of vintage interior styles, while Venetian blinds in all styles are a timeless option that gives the ability to increase and decrease daylight.
And of course roller blinds will always be in style thanks to their slim profile.

DIY Blinds
It’s easy to DIY measure and install your own blinds.
Blinds are one of the easiest window coverings to install – for roller blinds, you only need 2 screws on each bracket, and then you simply pop the blind into place.
Styles of Blinds
There are 5 main styles of blinds.
1. Roller blinds
Roller blinds are the most popular style of blind. These have a slim profile and roll up into a simple cylinder. They are available in blackout roller blinds, light filter roller blinds and sheer sunscreen roller blinds.
There are also double roller blinds that combine two roller blinds onto a single bracket. This is so you can have blackout roller blind alongside a sheer sunscreen or light filtering roller blind, all contained on a single bracket for a neat and tidy finish.
2. Roman blinds
Roman blinds are also a popular and simple style of blind. These fold up into wider horizontal panels. This offers a simple design, but lends an extra level of design focus to a room. When completely raised a final panel will be visible at the top, offering texture to rooms, while when lowered, the horizontal battens add visual interest.
Options include blackout Roman blinds and light filtering roman blinds.
3. Vertical blinds
Vertical blinds have vertical panels of fabric that hang down and are attached to a sliding track this allows the blind to be pulled across the window like a curtain. Each panel is attached to a rotating pendant, that allows the fabric panels to be angled to allow more or less light in and to control privacy.
Vertical blinds are only available in blackout fabric.
4. Venetian blinds
Venetian blinds are made from solid horizontal slats that are linked together. These are lowered and raised to the top of the window. The slats can also be tilted to allow more or less light in and also to control privacy.
Venetian materials are all solid, with a choice of aluminium venetians, timber venetians and PVC venetian blinds.
5. Honeycomb blinds
Honeycomb blinds, also known as cellular blinds, have a pleated accordion design where two layers of fabric create honeycomb shaped cells horizontally across the blind.
This means that when open, the cells trap a layer of air in between the two layers. This unique design is extremely energy efficient, helping to keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer.
When raised, these pleated cells fold up flat for a minimalist design.
You can choose between light filtering honeycomb blinds or blackout honeycomb blinds which have excellent energy efficiency properties.
Most Popular Blinds
The most popular blinds are roller blinds thanks to their slim design that suits any room and they are also one of the cheapest blinds.
Honeycomb blinds are the most popular choice of window covering for maximising thermal efficiency.
Benefits of Blinds
Blinds have plenty of benefits but the four main ones are:
1. Control Privacy
We love being able to look out of windows, but not letting people see into them. Blinds are a practical solution to control privacy when you want it. Simply lower the blinds at night or when you want increased privacy and then raise them when you want great views.
Some fabrics, like sheer sunscreen roller blinds, let you have the best of both worlds, stopping people from seeing in during the day while maintaining your view outside. Light filtering blinds can let in light while also maintaining privacy (save for a few shadows). But remember that once it’s dark outside, if the lights are on inside then people can see in, so if you’re after nighttime privacy remember to get a blackout blind or blackout curtain – or opt for double roller blinds.
2. Control Light
Love sleep ins? Then you need to make sure that pesky sun doesn’t wake you up. Blinds are a simple solution to controlling light in your home.
Want a nap? Lower the blinds. Feel like seeing the sun? Raise those blinds up.
After just a bit of light? Blinds with slats like vertical blinds and Venetian blinds, can be tilted to let just the right amount of light in.
Adjusting the light in your room by just a bit can also have benefits you may not have thought of. Hate watching TV during the day because of the glare on the screen? Blinds could be the answer. Even light filtering and sheer blinds can reduce the glare on your TV screen providing a better viewing experience without you having to sit in complete darkness.
3. Control temperature
Blinds can also have a noticeable impact on the temperature in your home. Large windows are beautiful but they can be a huge problem when it comes to thermal efficiency.
Adding another layer, particularly a blackout layer, between the window and the room helps maintain the temperature of your home so you can stay warm in winter and cool in summer.
In summer blinds work twice as hard, reducing radiant heat from the sun’s rays as well as stopping hot air being conducted through the glass.
The best blinds for thermal efficiency are honeycomb blinds. Also known as cellular blinds, these are blinds with 2 layers, forming a honeycomb shaped cell along the length of the blind. As well as simply adding an additional layer of protection, trapped air has excellent insulating properties – making honeycomb blinds the gold standard for thermal efficient blinds. While blackout honeycomb blinds are the most efficient, light filtering honeycomb blinds also do an amazing job.
4. Protect furniture and fittings from UV
One benefit of blinds that probably doesn’t immediately come to mind is protecting your furniture and home (including floorboards, carpets and rugs) from the sun.
Direct sun coming into your home can bleach wood and soft furnishings, but even sheer blinds can reduce UV rays, making sure your beautiful home stays looking its best for longer.
Blackout or Light Filtering Blinds
The choice of whether to have light filtering blinds or blackout blinds will come down to what functionality you’re trying to achieve.
Blackout blinds are great for bedrooms when you want as much light removal as you can and for rooms where you want 100% privacy both day and night.
You can choose from blackout roller blinds, blackout Roman blinds and blackout honeycomb blinds. Vertical blinds and Venetian blinds are also blackout – although the slats on these can allow some light to creep through, they both provide complete privacy.
Light filtering blinds are great for rooms where you want to provide privacy but still allow some daylight in. Light filtering blinds maintain privacy at night, with the potential exception of a few shadows – however this also means that during the day you can’t see out. They have a similar appearance to a frosted window.
You can choose from light filtering roller blinds, light filtering Roman blinds and light filtering honeycomb blinds.
If you do want to maintain your view and have daytime privacy then sheer blinds or sunscreen blinds are for you. These have a similar appearance to flyscreen. However as with any blind that maintains at view outside during the day, this means the reverse at night when people will be able to see in – so if you want daytime privacy, pair them with a blackout option.
