What’s better, roller blinds or Roman blinds?
When deciding if roller blinds or Roman blinds are better, it’s all down to personal choice and what you want to achieve. Roller blinds are better for a sleek finish with minimal presence in a room, while Roman blinds are a good option when you want to add more texture and personality in your designs.

What roller blinds can see out but not in?
Sheer sunscreen roller blinds are the best option when you want to see out of your windows but not allow people to see in. But remember, this is only true during the day. Sheer sunscreen roller blinds allow you to see into whichever side is brighter, so at night with the lights on people will be able to see inside unless you add an additional blind or curtain.
How to install roller blinds?

Roller blinds are sleek and functional addition to any window providing privacy, light control and can even help with maintaining the temperature of your home.
But not all windows are the same, that’s why made-to-measure roller blinds are a must for both functionality and design purposes. Ready-made roller blinds simply can’t compete – and often are almost the same price.
Types of Roller Blinds
There are 5 main types of roller blinds.
- Blackout roller blinds
These roller blinds remove the most light so they are perfect for bedrooms. They also offer complete privacy during the day and night. - Light filter roller blinds
Light filter roller blinds let light in while offering almost complete privacy day and night – only a few shadows may be seen. It’s a great option for rooms where you want to let light in but don’t care about the view and want to maintain privacy - Sheer Sunscreen roller blinds
These roller blinds maintain your view while reducing harsh glare from the sun. They also offer daytime privacy but can become see through at night. They are a good choice paired with a blackout curtain or blackout roller blind. - Double roller blinds
Get bang for your buck with double roller blinds. This is two roller blinds in a special double bracket so you can have a blackout roller blind paired with either a light filtering or sheer sunscreen roller blind. This lets you have blackout blinds for light removal when you want, and natural light with added privacy during the day. - Linked roller blinds
Linked roller blinds link up to three roller blinds all on a single control. Not only does this relieve the hassle of opening and closing them individually, but it also minimises the gaps between each blind compared to individually installing them. Linked roller blinds are a great choice for bi-fold or sliding doors.
Recess or Face Fit Roller Blind
When you install your roller blind, you have the option for it to be face fit (on the wall) or recessed (inside the window frame). You should decide which option to choose early, because this will change how you measure for your custom made roller blinds. There are pros and cons for each.
Pros and Cons of a Recess Fit Roller Blind
For a recessed roller blind, your window frame or recess needs to be flat and at least 50mm deep.
The benefits of a recess fit is that the roller blind is neatly tucked away in the window and doesn’t extend into the room creating a really seamless look. However with a recess fit, because you need room for the bracket on the edges, there is a tiny gap around the sides and top of the window. While this does let a bit of light in, it still blocks the vast majority of light for a great nights’ sleep.
Pros and Cons of a Face Fit Roller Blind
Face fit roller blinds will work in almost all circumstances because you don’t need to worry about the depth of the windows.
A face fit installation on a roller blind that has a back roll is the preferred installation for bedrooms as it removes the most light because the blind is as close to the wall as possible. This also increases the amount of thermal insulation roller blinds can offer by decreasing gaps around the blind.
The downside of a face fit installation is the blind extends slightly into the room – so take this into account if you are planning to install a sheer curtain over the top as you will need to mount the sheer curtain to the ceiling and allow enough clearance for the roller blind.
Should my roller blind roll forward or back?
When you order custom made roller blinds from Shadey, you have the option for the blind to roll forward (towards the room – also called front roll) or backwards (so it hangs closer to the window or wall – also called back roll).
There are pros and cons to each method.
A front roll is recommended or recess fit roller blinds to avoid any obstructions on the window. Also, if your material has an acrylic backing that doesn’t perfectly match the right side’ of the material, then a front roll will ensure only the “right side” is visible.
However if eliminating light and maintaining thermal efficiency is your goal, then a back roll (paired with a face fit installation) is the best option as this lets the blind hang as close to the wall as possible.
Benefits of Roller Blinds
Roller blinds are a simple, stylish and practical window covering that are also budget friendly – but those aren’t the only benefits of made to measure roller blinds from Shadey.
Control Light
Roller blinds can do so much more than just completely block out light (although they do that really well too).
Light filter roller blinds and sheer sunscreen roller blinds can reduce UV rays in your home, protecting your flooring and furniture so that they last for years.
Roller blinds can even improve your TV watching experience. Closing a blackout blind or curtain will of course improve the glare on your TV during the day, but you lose any natural light as well. A sheer sunscreen roller blind or light filtering roller blind will still allow natural light into the room, while reducing the glare on the TV for perfect daytime TV viewing.
Maintain Privacy
No matter where you are in your home, it’s impossible to under estimate the importance of privacy – but no one wants to live in the dark the whole time.
While blackout blinds are great at providing privacy at night, there are ways to add privacy during the day too without sitting in the dark.
Light filtering roller blinds provide daytime privacy and maintain privacy at night too – with only faint shadows able to be seen. Light filtering blinds also obscure the view while still letting in plenty of light so are good options for rooms where you prefer not to look outside or where you want to limit distractions – a great choice for ground floor rooms near busy pedestrian areas.
Sheer sunscreen roller blinds offer daytime privacy while also maintaining your view. With sheer sunscreen roller blinds you can see into the brighter side of the blind, so during the day they are great for rooms that are near public areas including shared driveways or street frontages – however make sure you have a block out option for nighttime (you can add a second roller blind, a blackout curtain or add both with a double roller blind).
Thermal insulation
Australian homes are famously terrible for maintaining a comfortable temperature, but adding window coverings, including roller blinds, is a step towards fixing this issue.
Roller blinds can reduce both radiant and convection heat in summer, and create a barrier from the cold in winter. While they won’t stop the problem completely, every step you can do will help.
While roller blinds are a good option, shutters, blackout curtains and honeycomb blinds are the best options if thermal insulation is your goal.
