Benefits of Sheer Curtains
Sheer curtains are often thought of a design piece but there are plenty of other benefits.
1. Privacy while maintaining the view
Sheer curtains, or just sheers as many people call them, stop your neighbours from seeing into your home during the day, but you can still see outside.
This one-way daytime privacy makes sheers ideal for public facing areas like street frontages and shared driveways, or where a neighbour overlooks your yard. Not only is your view outside partially maintained, but you’ll also keep all that beautiful natural light.
Remember at night, people will still be able to see in so layer with a blackout roller blind or blackout curtain.
2. Subtle statement piece
Without a doubt, sheer curtains are a design statement. They’re the window furnishing you choose when you want to elevate your room and go beyond the basics.
The gentle flow of a floor length curtain adds an organic textures to a room as the addition of large panels of textured fabric add visual warmth.
3. Makes your room look bigger
S-fold sheer curtains in particular can make your room look bigger. With equally spaced waves creating long vertical lines down the length of the curtain, your eyes are drawn up, accentuating the height of the room.
This optical illusion is further heightened curtains are installed on the ceiling.
Wall-to-wall curtains further help to make your space seem bigger by creating a single texture across the length of the room, especially at night when the contrast between walls and windows is reduced.
4. Soften light to reduce glare and protection furniture
Sheer curtains soften harsh light without completely restricting it. This results in a beautiful soft light that protects your furniture from those harmful UV rays, as well as flooring which can bleach over time.
Softening light in living areas also has the added benefit of reducing glare on screens so now you can watch TV during the day without having to sit in complete darkness.
How to Layer Sheer Curtains
While sheer curtains are beautiful on their own, you can double the functionality by layering them a blackout option.
Layer sheer curtains with roller blinds
Adding a blackout roller blind behind your sheer curtain is the most common way to layer sheer curtains for added functionality.
A simple roller blind is unobtrusive and one of the cheapest ways to add blackout functionality to your sheer. We recommend roughly matching the colour of your blind to your wall as this will create a seamless appearance behind the curtain at night, making your room seem larger.
Layering sheers with double curtains
Double the curtains are double the fun.
To layer sheer curtains with blackout curtains simply order black out curtains with the same width (and same heigh if both will be ceiling mount, otherwise measure again if one will be wall mounted).
We recommend installing the sheers closest to the wall because these are likely to remain closed, while you’ll draw your blackout curtains open each day.
Install the sheers first, then install the blackout curtains in front of them, ensuring enough room in between the tracks.
Remember that an S-fold curtain will need room in front and behind each track.
To save space, consider an S-fold for your front curtain, and pleat for the back one – although if doing this, then you may want to change to have the S-fold sheers at the front so that the S fold is always on show.
Lined curtains: Sheer curtains layered with a lining
If you love the visual appeal of sheers but don’t need the dual functionality, then opt for a lined curtain. We stitch a neutral blackout fabric to your sheer so that you get the functionality of a blackout curtain with the lightness of a sheer.
This is a great option when you want a blackout curtain but prefer to have the same fabric curtain in all rooms.
Most popular style of sheer curtain
The most popular style of sheer curtain is a sheer linen blend s-fold curtain. Our most popular fabric is Allusion in limestone. Allusion is a linen-blend so it has the softness of linen combined with durability of cotton and polyester so it can stand up to the wear and tear of a family home.
You can choose any style of heading for any of our fabrics, however the s fold style has become popular due to its ability to make a room look larger and the way it suits both modern and traditional homes.
If you love the look of Allusion but are looking for a more budget-friendly option, then Anna in Grain is a stunning linen-look fabric, while Wendy in Bone also offers a similar style.
Curved Sheer Curtains
Beautiful corner windows deserve a beautiful solution, and curved sheer curtains are exactly that.
A curved curtain has a track that goes around a corner with a single curtain, avoiding awkward stops and starts, while adding instant class through its seamless finish.
