Got a question?

How to measure for curtains?

To measure your curtains, consider the area you want the curtains to cover – not just the windows. Then it’s simply a matter of measuring the height and width. We take care of making sure that measurements are adjusted to allow for installation of tracks. Remember that S-fold curtains have a 30% stack – that means that when the curtain is open 30% of the track length will be covered by your curtain stack (for centre open, this would be 15% each side). Take a look at our full guide to measure for curtains.

How to hang and install curtains?

Installing your curtain track and hanging your curtains is easy. All you need is a drill, a step ladder and about 30 minutes. Follow our guide to installing curtains to learn how to hang your curtains.

Should curtains touch the floor?

It’s totally up to you how your curtains look, but we think curtains touching the floor is a great idea. It makes rooms feel taller and helps with thermal efficiency. We have two options on how your curtain will finish; hover or puddle. Hover will finish just off the floor and puddle will finish on the floor.

Do blackout curtains help with sleep?

If you’re someone who is sensitive to light and wakes up easily, then blackout curtains could definitely help with sleep. Our lined sheer curtains also provide the same blackout function but with the aesthetic of a sheer curtain.

For the most complete light removal, we recommend curtains be installed wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling.

Do curtains keep heat in?

Blackout curtains are especially good at keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling curtains are best for this as they provide the most complete barrier to convection temperature changes, and also help stop draughts entering the main area of the room.

What are S-fold curtains?

An S-fold curtain is a style of curtain where the top (or heading) is bent in the shape of an S, or long wave, that continues along the full length of the curtain. This contemporary style suits both modern and heritage homes.

Buy DIY Blackout Curtains Online

Blackout curtains are amazing for blocking out light so they are a great choice for bedrooms.

Ordering DIY made-to-measure blackout curtains means your curtains will fit perfectly and you won’t have to worry about trying to hem them yourself.

The best option for light removal and energy efficiency is blackout curtains that go wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling. This also creates a high-end design that is sure to impress.

All curtains from Shadey including blackout curtains, sheer curtains, lined curtains and curved curtains come with everything you need to install them yourself including a specialised track to help create the beautiful s-fold or pleated heading that you desire. All you need to bring is a drill, a tape measure and a step ladder.

Options when customising your blackout curtains

At Shadey, your curtains aren’t just custom made to your precise measurements – the variety of customisations goes far beyond that.
Here are just some of the customisations you can make to your blackout curtains beyond size and fabric and colour.

Heading type: Pleats and folds

Heading type is the name for top of your curtain and the choice to have either pleats or folds.

  1. S-fold: This is our most popular heading. S-fold curtains gently curved in front and behind of the track creating a gentle s-shaped wave.
  2. Triple pinch pleat: A traditional curtain heading style. The curtain is gathered into groups of 3 pleats along the track.
  3. Double pinch pleat: Like a triple punch pleat but only 2 pleats per group instead of 3.
  4. Pencil pleat: this curtain heading is made of lots of different pleats along the track – approximately the width of a pencil

Ceiling or wall mounted

You can choose to hang your curtains from the wall or from the ceiling. This choice will depend on what design you are going for overall as well as any ceiling architraves.

We will send you the correct brackets depending on your choice.

Track colour and type

Choose from white, black or silver curtain tracks.

Depending on your chosen heading type, we pre-install your track with matching track carriers for easy install of your curtain.

Where to stack and split your curtain

Choose whether you want your curtain in a single piece or with a split down the middle. You can choose to have it stack to the left or right – or “free flow” where it moves easily in both directions.

Remember when designing your curtain to consider how it looks when stacked.

S-fold curtains have a 30% stack when open (or 15% either side for centre open curtains) – that means if you want your full window on display then you need to allow additional material and track length.

You can also contact us for custom options like a track that is longer that your curtain to allow for flexibility.

Wand or no wand

You can choose to add a control wand to your curtain for free. This means you don’t need to touch the curtains themselves to control them.

Length and hem

Choose if you want your curtains to hover just above the floor or luxuriously puddle.
Hover length curtains look great as long as your floors are completely level, while puddle is a great option for older homes that may no longer have perfectly flat floors.

For blackout curtains we have options for 70mm hems or 100mm hems depending on your desired look.

Thermal Curtains

Looking for thermal curtains to increase your home’s energy efficiency? Blackout curtains are a great option when you want to keep out the cold.

To install your curtains for the best possible thermal efficiency, we recommend a wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling installation. This eliminates gaps around your window, creating a full wall of fabric to stop draughts from getting into your home.

Another popular product for thermal efficiency is honeycomb blinds which are very energy efficient.

Best curtains for bedrooms

Blackout curtains are by far the best option for bedrooms or for a nursery. Compared to other blackout options like roller blinds, blackout curtains offer greater light removal and look great when extended past the window and along the wall, further improving their light removal efficiency.

Removing light can improve sleep, so blackout curtains are a great way to ensure your sleep-ins are as peaceful as possible.
