What’s better, roller blinds or Roman blinds?

When deciding if roller blinds or Roman blinds are better, it’s all down to personal choice and what you want to achieve. Roller blinds are better for a sleek finish with minimal presence in a room, while Roman blinds are a good option when you want to add more texture and personality in your designs.

What roller blinds can see out but not in?

Sheer sunscreen roller blinds are the best option when you want to see out of your windows but not allow people to see in. But remember, this is only true during the day. Sheer sunscreen roller blinds allow you to see into whichever side is brighter, so at night with the lights on people will be able to see inside unless you add an additional blind or curtain.

Can roller blinds be fitted to a door?

To install roller blinds to a door, use a face fit installation method. Remember to account for space for the door to open. Take a look at our roller blind guide for face fit installation.

How to clean roller blinds?

To clean roller blinds, wipe clean with warm soapy water and damp cloth. For general maintenance, a quick dusting with a feather duster will do the trick.

How to install roller blinds?

To install roller blinds, you simply need to drill the brackets into the window frame or wall, then pop in the blind.

Follow our full instructions for installing roller blinds.

Can roller blinds be fitted outside a recess?

Roller blinds fitted to the face of your window frame (outside the recess) are called face fit roller blinds and are a very common method of installation. If you don't have a window frame (square set window) you can also mount the roller blind to the wall.

Face fit roller blinds have the brackets drilled into a wall (or a window surround that faces the same way as the wall). Face fit roller blinds with a back roll is the best installation for reducing light and maintaining the temperature inside your home. See how easy it is to install a face fit roller blind using our helpful guide.

Can you put 2 roller blinds together?

Yes! Installing two roller blinds together is a common way to install roller blinds as it gives you complete light and privacy control.

What is the current trend in window blinds?

Honeycomb blinds are having a moment thanks to an increased focus on sustainability – as well as an ever increasing emphasis on keep electricity bills low!

Roman blinds are also making a comeback with next generation fabrics that make them easy to care for while adding texture to a room. Aluminium Venetians blinds are also back in vogue thanks to a reimagining of vintage interior styles, while Venetian blinds in all styles are a timeless option that gives the ability to increase and decrease daylight.

And of course roller blinds will always be in style thanks to their slim profile.

What is the most popular type of window blind?

Roller blinds are the most popular type of blind by far.

They are the cheapest to buy, they are the most cost effective, they also have the most minimalistic design meaning the impact your home the least. They are also the easiest to install  - they only require 2 screws on each side (plus another one to anchor your control chain).

Which blinds are the most cost effective?

Roller blinds are the cheapest blinds, however that doesn’t mean they have to look cheap.

Made-to-measure roller blinds ensure that your blinds have a perfect fit, and they are also available in a wide range of colours and fabrics from smooth and simple to luxuriously textured.

What are the differences between cheap and expensive blinds?

A give away of cheap blinds is that they don’t fit the window properly.

Made-to-measure blinds are usually only fractionally more expensive than pre-cut blinds, however because they are made to fit perfectly to your windows they end up looking far more expensive.

While pre-made blinds might be a bit cheaper, made-to-measure blinds offer far greater value in the long run.

What blinds can you see out of but not see in?

Sheer sunscreen blinds are blinds that you can see out of, but people cannot see in during the day. They have a similar appearance to flywire.

Another window covering option that lets you maintain your view while offering daytime privacy is a sheer curtain.

Both options allow one way viewing into the area that is more brightly lit. During the day, this is usually outside. However with the lights on at night, this means people outside can see in. If nighttime privacy is important, it’s important to add a blackout blind.

Which blinds allow light in but are still private?

Light filter blinds allow in light but still offer both daytime and nighttime privacy.  At night it may be possible to see some soft shadows or vague silhouettes, however privacy is maintained.

Light filter blinds have an appearance similar to a frosted window, allowing light in while obstructing views and maintaining privacy.

You can choose light filter roller blinds, light filter roman blinds and light filter honeycomb blinds.

Is it easy to install blinds?

Installing blinds yourself is incredibly easy. You only need a measuring tape, a pencil and a drill. Shadey provides everything else including screws.

Installing a blind is much easier than putting together IKEA furniture. Roller blinds for example only use 2 screws on each bracket, plus on for a chain anchor.

Even if you’ve never used a drill before, this is a great project to get started on power tools with.

Why are some blinds being discontinued?

Older blinds can be lethal for children if they do not have the control chain anchored to the wall.

Shadey provides chain anchor clips to safely secure control chains to the wall.

Some states are implementing minimum rental requirements that require all window coverings with chain-style controls to have these anchors installed.

If you have older blinds that don’t have this incredibly important safety feature, it is definitely time to upgrade.

Do honeycomb blinds keep heat in?

Honeycomb blinds do an excellent job of keeping heat in winter, and keeping the heat out in summer.

This makes them great for both warm and cool climates.

Do Roman Blinds look better inside the window or outside?

Roman Blinds are a versatile product and can be mounted inside or outside the recess of your window. However, we always recommend installing your Roman Blinds outside of your window recess so you can cover your entire window. When your Roman Blind is fully open, the panels of the blind are folded behind each other so depending on the height of your window, the blind could exceed the depth of your recess.

If you'd like to install a blind within your recess and have a seamless finish, we'd recommend a Roller Blind or Honeycomb Blind which takes up only 50mm & 25mm of depth within your recess respectively.

Curtains

How to hang and install curtains?

Installing your curtain track and hanging your curtains is easy. All you need is a drill, a step ladder and about 30 minutes. Follow our guide to installing curtains to learn how to hang your curtains.

How to clean curtains?

The instructions for cleaning your curtains will depend on the material you’ve chosen. Check out the individual product pages for instructions as they can differ based on fabric composition and fabric type.

How to measure for curtains?

To measure your curtains, consider the area you want the curtains to cover – not just the windows. Then it’s simply a matter of measuring the height and width. We take care of making sure that measurements are adjusted to allow for installation of tracks. Remember that S-fold curtains have a 30% stack – that means that when the curtain is open 30% of the track length will be covered by your curtain stack (for centre open, this would be 15% each side). Take a look at our full guide to measure for curtains.

How to choose curtains for living room?

When choosing curtains for a living room, consider your requirements for both style and functionality.

Once you’ve decided on an overall style, it’s time for the fun part. Order some samples of our curtain fabrics and we’ll send them straight to your home. We recommend sticking them to your window and looking at them at different times of day so you can see the fabric with and without sun.

What are S-fold curtains?

An S-fold curtain is a style of curtain where the top (or heading) is bent in the shape of an S, or long wave, that continues along the full length of the curtain. This contemporary style suits both modern and heritage homes.

Are do it yourself curtains a thing?

DIY curtains are definitely a thing – and you don’t need intense DIY skills. Even if you’ve never used a drill before, hanging made-to-measure curtains is an easy DIY activity to get started on. Take a look at our helpful guide on how to install curtains.

Should curtains touch the floor?

It’s totally up to you how your curtains look, but we think curtains touching the floor is a great idea. It makes rooms feel taller and helps with thermal efficiency. We have two options on how your curtain will finish; hover or puddle. Hover will finish just off the floor and puddle will finish on the floor.

Do curtains keep heat in?

Blackout curtains are especially good at keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

Wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling curtains are best for this as they provide the most complete barrier to convection temperature changes, and also help stop draughts entering the main area of the room.

How high should a curtain rod be above a window?

If you’re choosing a face-fit or wall-mount option for your curtains, then you can choose any height for them that you think will suit your space, however a common rule that some people use is the place the track halfway between the ceiling and the top of the window.

What colour curtains go with light grey walls?

If you have light grey walls, then you can choose to match the walls or go with a contrasting colour.

White offers a gentle contrast which will lighten the room, while dark greys and charcoals (particularly in blackout fabrics) offer a moody yet cozy vibe. We also have plenty of shades of grey if you want to try to colour match – but remember to account for the material looking different during the day compared to the night.

We recommend matching the under tones of your wall though – so if you have a warm grey, look for warmer under tones, and if you have a cool tone grey look at cool under tones.

Do blackout curtains help with sleep?

If you’re someone who is sensitive to light and wakes up easily, then blackout curtains could definitely help with sleep. Our lined sheer curtains also provide the same blackout function but with the aesthetic of a sheer curtain.

For the most complete light removal, we recommend curtains be installed wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling.

Are curtains expensive?

Curtains can be more expensive than other window treatments like roller blinds, however they offer a much more elevated style choice and have plenty of benefits. You can save money on curtains and still achieve professional results by buying them made-to-measure and then installing them yourself in 30 minutes or less.

Can my neighbours see through my sheer curtains?

Sheer Curtains elevate your interior space with flowing fabric from wall mounted or ceiling mounted brackets. During the day, sheer curtains maintain privacy so neighbours can't see through while letting in sunlight to brighten your space. At night, if you have an interior light on you can see inside to an extent depending on the style of fabric. If privacy is important, you can pair a Sheer Curtain with a Blackout Roller Blind which is a popular combination.

Do Sheer Curtains go over blinds?

Layering products on windows or doors is very popular to enhance the functionality and aesthetic of your space. You can install a roller blind, honeycomb blind, venetian blind or a roman blind on the window to provide blackout functionality for your space and have a sheer curtain mounted above. A popular option is to ceiling mount a sheer curtain, while a roller blind is mounted on the window below.

Are Sheer Curtains still in?

Sheer Curtains are very much still in style and have been for quite some time. Fundamentally Sheer Curtains elevate your space and make your space feel grand. We offer a range of styles called 'headings' here at Shadey to suit any home. Our pleated curtains (double & triple pinch pleat) are best suited to traditional homes and our S-Fold curtains are a more modern heading but suit any space. S-Fold curtains are the most popular heading style as the organic waves of the fold provide a luxurious elegance to your home.
