How to measure for Shutters
1 - Getting Started
Shutters can elevate any home with a classic design and are incredibly simple to maintain. Made from high quality PVC, it's important to measure carefully and determine whether your windows best support a recess fit, face fit or direct fit shutter.
- 1 to 2 people
- A metal tape measure
- A pen or pencil
- Piece of paper
- Step Ladder
5-10 mins
2 - Your Fitting
Blend your new shutters with your window frame by recess fitting.
3 - Recess Fit
With your measuring tape, ensure there’s at least a 65mm depth between the window pane and front edge of your window frame. As the structure of the shutter fills your window frame with the shutter frame and blades it's important to check for any obstructions within your window frame.
A minimum depth of 65mm is required from any obstruction (like a window winder) to the front edge of your window frame. This is to ensure the shutter frame and blades when they're in the open position doesn't make contact with your window or attachments.
4 - Measure the width
Using your measuring tape, measure the inside width of your window frame across the top, middle & bottom of your window frame. As the shutter is rigid, you need to ensure to take the smallest width measurement. Whichever measurement is the smallest, note this down as your width measurement.
5 - Measure the height
Measure the height of your recess by taking the exact measurement from the top of the recess to the bottom in three positions from left, middle & right. Whichever is the smallest measurement is your height measurement.
6 - Measure your midrail(s)
A midrail is a fixed piece in your shutter that provides structural integrity to the whole shutter.
- One midrail is required if your height measurement exceeds 1500mm.
- Two midrails are required if your height measurement exceeds 2100mm.
If you're happy to have the midrail in the exact centre of your shutter height, then no need to take a measurement. If you need your midrail at a custom height, then follow these steps.
Required for height measurements between 1500mm-2100mm - To measure your midrail, for best results place the midrail at a point that matches your window design. Measure from the bottom of your recess to the exact centre of the horiztonal mullion of your window (if applicable).
Required for height measurements above 2100mm - To measure for your midrails, for best results place the midrail at a point that matches your window design. Measure from the bottom of your recess to the exact centre of the first horiztonal mullion of your window. Repeat for the second horizontal mullion, ensuring to measure from the bottom of your recess.
